Livestock refers to any domestic or domesticated animal, including bovine (including buffalo and bison), ovine, porcine, caprine, equine, poultry and bees raised for food or in the production of food. The products of hunting or fishing of wild animals shall not be considered part of this definition.

Requirement for Organic LiveStock & LiveStock Products Certification

The organic certification requirement of livestock, poultry and products varies from country to country and involves a set of livestock, poultry and product standard for producers, processors and handlers. A person seeking an organic certification of livestock, poultry and products must fulfill the following requirements

  • Establish, implement and update annually an Organic Plan – Livestock, Poultry and Products.

  • The choice of livestock and poultry, breeds, strains and breeding methods should be choosen according to their adaptation to the local climatic and socio-economic conditions, vitality and resistance to disease.

  • Bovine including buffalo for slaughter must be reared under organic management 3/4th of their life span, or no later than the second day of life for poultry. For egg production, poultry must be reared under organic management for 6 workweeks.

  • Dairy animals must be managed organically for 90 days during the implementation period established by the certification body, after that 6 months in order for milk or dairy products to be sold, labeled or represented as organic.

  • Producers must provide maximum diet from feedstuffs produced as organic, at least 85% fed provided to ruminants and 80% for non-ruminants livestock and poultry from organic status. The fed is calculated on a dry matter basis, feed obtained from organic sources.

  • The supplements, antioxidants, preservatives, colouring agents, probiotics, enzymes and microorganisms should be from natural sources and in compliance with the list published by the competent authority.

  • Genetically modified sources of feed, supplements, antioxidants, preservatives, colouring agents, probiotics, enzymes and microorganisms is prohibited.

  • Preventive management practices must be used to keep animals healthy. Producers may not withhold treatment of sick or injured animals. However, animals treated with a prohibited substance may not be sold as organic.

  • All vaccinations required by law of the land should be permitted.

  • All organic livestock are required to have access to the outdoors year-round. Animals may only be temporarily confined due to documented environmental or health considerations.

  • Organically raised animals must not be given hormones to promote growth or antibiotics for any reason.

  • Mutilation, such as, tail docking, cutting of teeth, trimming of beaks and dehorning are not permitted. It may be allowed for reasons of safety under registered veterinarian.

  • Each animal will be identified with a unique identification number with ear tags as specified by the International Committee on Animal Record (ICAR).

  • All records pertaining to production, health, breeding, feeding, storage, purchase, sales available and maintain all records at least five years beyond its creation.
